ESD products
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge): electrostatic discharge, is the rapid release of electrical energy from an electrostatic source; equalization of potential difference.
In the case of the discharge and rapid discharge of electrical energy on sensitive electronic components (ESDS), or the presence of this energy nearby, the components may lose their functionality or their value may change. The relative ESD sensitivity of a component depends on the construction and the materials used. The smaller and faster a component is, the greater its sensitivity.
The degree of static charging depends on many things, e.g. from humidity, frictional materials... Examples in everyday life: when getting out of a car, on metal or electronic equipment after driving on the bodywork, PVC, laminated parquet, or carpet, e.g. computer, or even discharge during a handshake.
E.g. walking on a carpet:
- 35,000 Volts at 10-20% humidity
- 1500 Volts at 65 – 90 % humidity
The best ESD protection is to combine the prevention of static charge with the proper dissipation of static charges if they do occur.
